Makeup can feel overwhelming when you’re faced with dozens of products and no clear idea of what goes where. Whether you’re a beginner building your personal kit or a budding makeup artist learning the ropes, understanding the correct order of makeup application is crucial for achieving a flawless, long-lasting look.
At Evana Studio, we guide our students through every step of makeup layering, product pairing, and technique — because great makeup starts with the right knowledge. In this blog, let’s break down the role and correct order of each essential makeup product, from primer to setting spray.
Applying products in the wrong order can lead to issues like:
Patchy or uneven coverage
Cakey or greasy finish
Poor product blending
Reduced longevity of the makeup
Knowing what goes where not only improves the outcome but also helps your makeup last longer and feel more comfortable on the skin.
Before makeup, always prep your skin with the right skincare. A clean, hydrated, and protected base allows makeup to glide on smoothly.
Order:
Cleanser
Toner (optional)
Moisturizer
Sunscreen (daytime)
What it does:
Primer creates a smooth canvas for makeup and helps it stay in place longer. There are different primers for different concerns — mattifying, pore-filling, hydrating, illuminating, etc.
Where it goes:
Apply it all over the face (or only on specific areas like the T-zone) after skincare and before any makeup.
What it does:
Color correctors neutralize discoloration. For example, orange cancels out dark circles, green cancels redness, and peach works well on dull areas.
Where it goes:
Apply on targeted areas before foundation, but only if necessary.
What it does:
Foundation evens out your skin tone and provides a uniform base. Choose a finish (matte, dewy, natural) and coverage (light to full) based on your preference.
Where it goes:
Apply and blend all over the face and neck for consistency.
What it does:
Concealer adds extra coverage to specific areas like under the eyes, spots, or blemishes.
Where it goes:
Use it after foundation only where needed. Use a slightly lighter shade under the eyes for brightness, and a skin-tone match for blemishes.
What it does:
Powder sets cream and liquid products to avoid creasing or transfer. It can be loose or compact, and mattifying or luminous.
Where it goes:
Apply under the eyes, on the T-zone, and anywhere you tend to get oily. Use a light hand to avoid caking.
What it does:
Contouring defines and sculpts the face. Bronzer adds warmth.
Where it goes:
Apply contour to the hollows of cheeks, jawline, sides of the nose, and forehead edges. Bronzer goes along the cheekbones and temples.
What it does:
Blush adds color and freshness to the face.
Where it goes:
Apply on the apples of the cheeks and blend upward toward the temples.
What it does:
Highlighter adds glow and dimension to high points of the face.
Where it goes:
Top of the cheekbones, brow bone, bridge of the nose, and cupid’s bow.
What it does:
Eyebrow products shape, define, and fill in sparse areas.
Where it goes:
Use a pencil, powder, gel, or pomade to enhance your natural shape. Brush out for a natural finish.
What it does:
Adds depth, drama, or color to the eyes.
Where it goes:
Apply lighter shades on the lid, medium shades in the crease, and deeper tones on the outer corner or lash line.
What it does:
Defines the eyes and adds sharpness or softness, depending on the look.
Where it goes:
Use on the lash line, waterline, or to create wings or graphic lines.
What it does:
Mascara lifts, lengthens, and darkens lashes.
Where it goes:
Apply from the roots to the tips of your upper and lower lashes.
What it does:
Lip liner shapes, lipstick colors, and gloss adds shine or hydration.
Where it goes:
Line the lips first for definition, then fill in with lipstick or gloss.
What it does:
Locks in your makeup, controls shine or hydrates depending on the formula.
Where it goes:
Spray all over the face from a distance as the final step. Let it air dry.
Always work in thin, blendable layers — it’s easier to build than to remove.
Use tools that suit your skill level — fingers, brushes, or sponges all have their place.
Invest in quality over quantity — the right product in the right place works better than too many layers.
